Industrial Steam is the leading manufacturer of .005 cc/l pressurized and atmospheric deaerators. Where did it all start?

Industrial Steam was founded in Oakland, California in 1952 by Martin “Mike” Bekedam. As was common then, Mike was a self-taught engineer and electrician who had a flair for inventing and innovating, holding 16 patents. The first employee Mike would hire was Jim Williams. Over the years Jim learned the boiler business and became the chief engineer. Mike and Jim were experienced serving the large industrial market of Northern California that included wineries, tomato processing and meat processing facilities. In the early years, they custom built boilers, burners, deaerators and chemical feed systems. As the boiler industry began to consolidate, Industrial Steam’s focus shifted to deaerators. Through the years, Industrial Steam has been an innovator in the industry and an early adopter and pioneer of many new technologies. In 2002, Industrial Steam relocated its primary manufacturing facility to Atlantic, Iowa. Jim Williams just celebrated his 50th year with industrial steam and still works on a part-time basis.

Industrial Steam Products

Pressurized Deaerators

Steam Flow: Provides guaranteed performance that is unmatched in the industry. Best for all conditions. Will provide .005cc/l feedwater regardless of condensate return percentage and load swings. Typical application is when condensate exceeds 40% or reliable performance is required.

Tray Type: Applications range from large power industry to small commercial buildings. Best application is when condensate return is less than 50% and loads are constant.

Jet Spray: Most common form of pressurized deaerator. Best stand alone application is less than 30% condensate return and loads that are constant. For system exceeding 30% condensate return, this system frequently is paired with a surge tank.

Atmospheric Deaerators

Spray Flow II: Primary application is in hospitals where a shut down for inspection is not possible and reliable performance is a necessity. Systems with high percentages of gravity returns. Provides guaranteed performance during all load conditions for systems with greater than 40% condensate return.

Fuel Oil Systems

Oil Pumping Skids: available to meet the demands of your application and facility. Oil Pumping Skids can range from very simple systems typically found on boiler loop applications to multi-generator systems involving backup features. Custom designed pump skids for heavier oils or other application requirements are available.

Fuel Oil Filtration Systems: As larger amounts of fuel is being stored for even longer periods of time the need for filtration is even greater. Fuel Oil over time will degrade in two areas. First microbes will grow in the oil which will affect the reliability of the generator itself.

Accessories: In addition to the above basic building blocks to a complete fuel oil system for your facility.

Blowdown Systems

Blowdown Heat Recovery: Industrial grade continuous blowdown heat recovery system. Saves fuel by directing flash for use in the deaerator and transferring heat from blowdown to cold makeup water using a plate/frame or shell/tube heat exchanger.

Blowdown Separators: Wilson boiler blowdown systems are built around the Wilson centrifugal blowdown separator. The boiler blowoff is piped tangentially into the separator. In the resulting vortex the pressure is released, allowing the steam flash to rise through the vent while the water and sludge fall through the drain.

Exhaust Heads: The use of Wilson Exhaust Heads eliminates objectionable noise created by high velocity discharge of steam, air, or other gases. They also offer protection from exhausted moisture by collecting and draining off liquids entrained in steam vapors.

Blowdown Tanks: Wilson engineering builds all sizes of tanks.

Condensing Units: National, state and local anti-pollution laws, either existing or proposed, generally include maximum temperature limitations for waste water drained into lakes, streams, etc.

Condensate Recovery

High Pressure Condensate Return (HPR): Industrial Steam HPR specifically designed for the corrugating industry.

Zero Flash: High Pressure Condensate return systems that conserve energy by pumping hot water directly from the process into the steam boiler.

Controls Upgrade

Electronic Modulating Level Control: The RWF40 Modulating Feedwater Control Valve Application Guide is intended for use by OEMs that integrate the RWF40 controller into their products.

Pump Controls: Many pumping systems are inefficient and are in great need of upgrading. Sometimes that means replacing the pumps and the controls, and other times only the controls need to be upgraded. Pump sequencing and modulating with variable frequency drives is a great means to achieve these savings. This solutions may be tied in a level control solution or stand alone

Programmable Logic Controller (PLC): PLC controls can be added to any complete deaerator system to have centralized control of all analog (level pressure) and discrete (alarm points) control points in your system. PLC can be used to stage pumps on and off, modulating variable frequency drives, control level and pressure, all from a easy to use touchscreen interface.

Industrial Steam is proud to announce the update to their manufacturing process with the acquisition of a Prima Platino general purpose laser cutting machine. With our new laser cutting abilities, Industrial Steam will continue to exceed the demand of their customers. The techs at Industrial Steam have achieved certification and have been up and running the new equipment since late in 2018.

The Prima Platino laser cutting machine allows Industrial Steam to cut 5 times faster than the previous water jet technology. The 5000-watt laser has the capabilities to cut up to 1″ material with precision while maintaining an optimum cut quality allowing Industrial Steam to have production ready parts without the need of post processing. With a wide range of automation modules such as an automated loading table, this is the right solution for Industrial Steam’s large-scale production.

Industrial Steam’s 80,000 lb/hr Tray Type Deaerator for The CPV Fairview Energy Center

Industrial Steam working with Kiewit Power Constructors Co. Have designed and manufactured the 80,000 lb/hr Tray Type Deaerator that serves the auxiliary boilers for the the CPV Fairview Energy Center. A new natural-gas powered electric generating facility in Jackson Township, north of the city of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The project is led by Competitive Power Ventures (CPV), an independent power producer dedicated to increasing America’s energy sustainability by providing safe, reliable, cost effective and environmentally responsible power generation.

Industrial Steam’s 80,000 lb/hr Tray Type Deaerators special features include a completely packaged system with industrial Flowserve pumps, ladders and platforms, corrugated insulation jacket, galvanized surfaces, B31.1 power piping. Special two stage finish procedure utilized a Carboline primer with a Carboline finish coat over sandblasted surface for the tank and piping. The structure was hot dip galvanized.

The CPV Fairview Energy Center project required the GTAW root pass with spray arc cover on all welding of the piping. Including an all stainless steel make-up assembly.

Industrial Steam installs Tray Type Deaerator at Pactiv’s state-of-the-art building, Corsicana, TX

ndustrial Steam has installed Model 45ST5, 150,000 #/hour package tray type deaerator with a PLC based control system at Pactiv’s new state-of-the-art building in Corsicana Texas. Pactiv-Corsicana manufacturing facility is a 150,000 square foot addition to its existing manufacturing facility. It will be the second site in Pactiv’s global network to manufacture expanded polystyrene cups and containers. Pactiv is the world’s largest producer of food service disposables and food packaging operating 55 manufacturing plants in seven countries.
